You won’t break a leg on our stage (application environment series part 5)
It seems like whenever Apple announces that a new product is being released and the sample is available, the number of shoppers in our local Apple Store increases. Even though all Apple products can be conveniently ordered online, many people prefer to see and use the latest technology before jumping in to make a purchase. Well, at Four51 we schedule a month long Beta Program prior to every major release to let our customers see and use our latest technology before releasing it in to the live environment.

What happens when a Network becomes a Not-Work?
Many of you may have read about the computer failure at the Federal Aviation Administration and the subsequent delays it caused for hundreds of flights throughout the US. There was never a safety issue, but the glitch raises important questions about the resiliency and reliability of any modern computer network. As it turns out, the FAA did have a backup system available, but that system quickly became overwhelmed and it wasn’t until later in the day that the system was able to manage flights properly. All of this begs the question “What is the point of having a backup system if it is unable to step in and save the day when called upon?”

Four51 News: Four51 Coordinates Special Olympics Golf Event
As many of you know, Four51 has partnered with Special Olympics of Minnesota to assist in coordinating and staffing events. In May we jumped in head first, helping out with the track & field competition. So with one event under our belt we immediately started planning for the golf event.
The golf event was held at the National Sports Center in Blaine, MN on a balmy summer day in late July. Four51 employees were out in force, with nearly the entire company volunteering! There were 3-hole, 9-hole, and skills competitions. Four51 employees acted as escorts for the athletes, keeping score and shuttling them from hole to hole, in addition to running the skills competitions. There were approximately 45 volunteers assisting over 100 athletes.
The golf event is what Special Olympics refers to as a Unified Partner event, which means that each athlete is paired with a partner, with the partner and athlete alternating shots. It was truly an amazing and inspiring experience to see teams of brothers, sisters, fathers, sons, mothers and daughters all competing and enjoying a beautiful day outside. The level of patience, of joy, of competition, and of commitment that the athletes have is nothing short of incredible.
The team at Four51 walked away from the golf event with an immense sense of pride and accomplishment. Sure we were all a little tired and a little sunburned (in some cases, very sunburned), but we all agreed we couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend the day.
Four51 continues to work with Special Olympics of Minnesota, and is looking forward to helping with the events this winter and in all of 2008.
